What can I say about Dave Robertson? Well I can tell you this much...
Dave has been playing in bands since high school back in Merseyside since he was a young teenager. His father played and naturally Dave picked up the 6 string habit not taking him long to lead the vocals and play the guitar in various incarnations of groups belting out tunes by the Beatles, the Who, America and others. Later, after a stint in university in South Wales, Dave began writing his own material recorded on an 8 track of a friend before going on to find a collection of local musicians with whom he would perform his own music with for the first time. (if the truth be known he did a little of this before but that is for another day) This band, Sopha, based in Swansea soon became a popular attraction and Dave's increasingly powerful and melodic vocals accompanied by sympathetic guitar and an interesting rhythm section endured them to their faithful following. This new music by now had the signatures of Oasis, The Who , and Travis (though Dave may have sounded like Travis before Travis if you can work that one out) and others with three distinguishing features. Dave's lyrics, song structure and vocals. Magic. This band separated and with a group of musicians Dave formed Riley who enjoyed similar appraisals and went on to play in America as well as touring tirelessly in the UK. The album Chairs Tables and Walls a fitting testimony to their time together. I saw these these guys whilst living in London in various venues and they never failed to deliver. |

Over the last ten years, Dave has taken time out from the band environment and has been quietly continuing to produce new music and material. Drawing inspirations from his favourite artists like Neil Young and from musicians enlivening the folk and americana music scenes, Dave has been building up a catalogue of songs he is patiently waiting to play to his many fans. Soon, there will be a new album reflecting the man and his entry into the hall of new americana music. It will be worth waiting for.
When I ask Dave what genre could he fit his music into these days, he finds it as tricky as I do but you could say there are elements of americana music, folk music and rock. Sometimes a bit more of one than the other but others they just all blend into one big bouncy ball of highly listenable musicability Dave is one of the finest singer songwriters in the UK. He is a poet, a melodist and a true artist. A troubadour, very much like Roy Harper, but waiting to find his new audience and when they convene it will be well met. I can tell you this because I have known him for quite some and he is my friend. Please enjoy the wonderful, cutting, uplifting and melodic music of the new Americana music artist , Dave Robertson. You will not be disappointed. Paul Landry July 2011 |
